Antonia Dr Reale
Antonia Reale is a PhD candidate at Monash University (Myeloma Research Group, Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, Central Clinical School, Melbourne, Australia).
Antonia Reale has completed 2.3 years out of 6 as student intern performing both clinical and laboratory-based research (2008-2010) at Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology, Internal Medicine “G. Baccelli” and ‘Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Biology’ under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Dammacco, Prof. Angelo Vacca and Prof. Roberto Ria
(University of Bari Medical School, teaching hospital Policlinico di Bari, Italy). Her work generated her experimental thesis (Tumour hypoxia in Multiple Myeloma progression) for the completion of her medical degree in 2010 (Doctor of Medicine and Surgery).
She then completed 1 year as medical intern (Internal Medicine “G. Baccelli” and ‘Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Biology’, University of Bari Medical School) before securing a government-funded stipend to undertake a full-time post-grad training in medical oncology. Antonia completed her training with honors in 2016 (5-year Diploma in Medical Oncology – School of Specialization in Medical Oncology, School of Medicine - Teaching Hospital Policlinico di Bari, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy).
During her training she has gained basic and translational research experience both at ‘Dipartimento di Medicina Interna e Oncologia Umana’, Bari, Italy and ‘Myeloma Research Group’ (Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, Central Clinical School, Monash University/The Alfred, Melbourne, Australia, 2014-2016). The research conducted in Melbourne was presented for her final examination and recently published.
She then was awarded an RTP (Australian Government Research Training Program) Scholarship and started a PhD by translational research in 2018 in Melbourne, Australia, under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Spencer. Her project involves the study of extracellular vesicles in Multiple Myeloma as potential drivers of disease progression and liquid biomarkers.
She has collaborated for several years (2008-2014) with the Myeloma Group at Internal Medicine ‘Baccelli’ and ‘Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Biology’ (Dipartimento di Medicina Interna e Oncologia Umana), Bari, Italy, under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Dammacco, Prof. Angelo Vacca and Prof. Roberto Ria. She has also worked as Sub Investigator and Study Coordinator for Phase I-III Trials for Multiple Myeloma Patients.
Dr Antonia Reale has over 30 peer reviewed publications including original research articles, review articles and book chapters. Since 2009 she has presented, also as invited speaker, at several national and international conferences (oral and poster presentations) on angiogenesis, hypoxia, bone disease, neutropenia, microarray-based approaches, mechanisms of progression and resistance to proteasome inhibitors, extracellular vesicles, in Myeloma. She was co-president, co-chair and speaker at the international workshop ‘Extracellular vesicles and their role in patients with multiple myeloma’ (1st July 2021). She was awarded a prize by research in 2015 (“Premio O.M.C.e O. Bari per la Ricerca 2015”).
She is a member of several Societies including The Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), Student Network on EVs (SNEV), Società Italiana per le Vescicole Extracellulari (EVIta), International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV), Italian Medical Society of Victoria (IMS-Victoria), Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ).
